3D to 2D

For the 3D to 2D project I took a picture of one of my balsa wood sculptures, printed it out four times, and cut it into pieces. I then placed the pieces on a sheet of paper into a pattern and took a picture.

Artist Statement:
My memento is a representation of the first time I swam in competition on my high school swim team. I remember that as I swam, I felt as though I was fully surrounded by water, and that nothing else existed. I remember feeling as though my time in the pool seemed to last a lifetime, and that the more I swam, the longer the pool felt.  Despite the fact that most people would feel trapped and suffocated if they had viewed things the same way I did, I personally felt at peace. These memories and feelings are what I hoped to display in the piece. I chose the blue coloring for the resin to represent the peace that I felt, and I chose a long mold for the resin to represent the way time seemed to slow down for me in that moment. I chose the balsa wood base to represent the grounded, yet free feeling I experienced.  The piece also represents what I remember seeing, the blue resin represents the water that surrounded me.  The balsa wood epitomizes the cream colored bottom of the pool that I watched the whole time, looking for the mark that would let me know when to flip, to go the other way.

Artist Statement:
The map that I chose to create is one that represents my memories of my home state. I grew up in North Carolina, in the Piedmont region. The mountains are on one side of me, and the coast is on the other. In two hours I can see the beautiful views from the top of a mountain. In four hours I can enjoy the relaxing sound of ocean waves. I chose the color scheme as a representation of who I am. While most people see blue as being a melancholy, sad color, it is a happy one for me. I have a visual processing disorder, that causes many difficulties in life, and sometimes in my art as well, but the color blue actually helps me to see better. Because this particular color has helped me in many was, it has become a symbol of hope to me personally. It symbolizes hope that everything will work out, and that help will always be there if you need it. I chose to layer my map using the stacking method to create a topographical map that could better display the heights and depths of the mountains and ocean in my home state.

Masked Identity

In Process:

Final:

Inspiration:

Artist Statement:
My mask is a representation of my past and my hope for the future. The color yellow is representative of  happiness and hope, and the purple is used for is complimentary properties. The prop I chose was the ladybug, which is representative of hope for the future. These symbols of hope link directly to the hope I had throughout my past that my future would be better. The mask was shaped like a bee keeper's hat, and the photos were made in nature because I wanted to maintain the nature related theme of the piece.  Nature also is representative of hope for the future because nature is in a constant state of renewal
